Aviācijas gaisa kuģu tehniskās apkopes speciālisti strādā aviokompānijās un lidmašīnu tehniskās apkopes un remonta bāzēs. Viņi ir atbildīgi par dažāda veida lidmašīnu gatavību lidojumam. Aviācijas speciālisti pārbauda, uztur, modificē un remontē lidmašīnu konstrukcijas, dzinējus un avioniku. Veicot gaisa kuģa apkopi angārā, tiek veikts arī liels darbs pie gaisa kuģa virsmas seguma pārbaudes, pilnīga vai daļēja remonta, un no tā izrietošās korozijas noņemšanas no gaisa kuģa konstrukcijas elementiem. Aviācijas lidmašīnu tehniskās apkopes speciālisti ir svarīgs posms lidojuma drošības nodrošināšanā, kuru darbību, kā arī pašu lidojumu drošību regulē Eiropas Aviācijas drošības aģentūra (EASA). EASA noteikumi ir būtiski daudzu valstu aviācijas likumdošanā. Pirmais solis profesijas iegūšanā ir pamatapmācības programmas apgūšana, gaisa kuģa tipa apmācības programmas, kas ietver teorētiskās un praktiskās daļas. Mācību programma ietver inženierzinātnes, kā arī ievadu avionikā, lidmašīnu konstrukcijās, reaktīvajos dzinējos un sistēmās. Pabeidzot apmācību programmu, studenti saņem aviācijas skolas diplomu un EASA PART-66 sertifikātus. Turpmāk ceļā uz licences (AML - Aircraft Maintenance License) iegūšanu turpināsiet 2 gadu darbu aviācijas uzņēmumos, kā rezultātā iegūsiet tiesības pieteikties uz licences saņemšanai. AML - Aviācijas tehniskās apkopes tehniķa gaisa kuģa tehniskās apkopes licence apliecina gaisa kuģa tehniskās apkopes inženiera kvalifikāciju. Šī licence ir starptautiski atzīta EASA regulā - aviācijas tehniķis - mehāniķis B.1.kategorija, aviācijas tehniķis - avioniķis B.2 kategorija. B.2 kategorija ļauj veikt gaisa kuģu aviācijas un elektronikas tehnisko pārbaudi. Patiešām, tikai B.1 kategorijas speciālistam tiek dota atļauja gaisa kuģa tehniskai pārbaudei ar tiesībām parakstīt apliecību par gaisa kuģa atbilstību ekspluatācijas noteikumiem pēc tehniskās apskates veikšanas (tiesības “Realace to Service”). Ir vērts atzīmēt, ka EASA gradācijā ir A kategorija - Lidmašīnu mehāniķis. Šīs kategorijas profesionāļiem ir piekļuve tikai nelielu plānveida darbu veikšanai un vienkāršu defektu novēršanai. Bet nav iespējams iedomāties lidmašīnu tehniskās apkopes veikšanu bez A kategorijas pārstāvjiem.
